ISLANDS VS. BUOYS
Students identify both the expectations (“shoulds”) and the dreams (“want to’s”) of their future, and explore where there are synergies and tensions.
KEY WAYFINDER TRAIT: Instinctively Purposeful
ESTIMATED TOTAL TIME: ~ 65 minutes
MATERIALS NEEDED: None
This activity was created as way to essentially get students thinking critically about all the “hoops” they feel they might need to jump through. The hoops idea comes from a book called “Excellent Sheep” written by William Deresiewicz. One of the themes in his book is the idea that our education system is training our students to be “excellent sheep,” who perform beautifully and are very capable, but who can only respond to the assignments and challenges we set before them, not the visions they have for themselves.
We wanted to make an activity that gets students thinking about all of the hoops or “should's” they might feel about their future - for example, getting into a good school, making good money, living close to home, etc.
