We have created five short mindfulness meditations for you to use in your Wayfinder classes. Mindfulness helps us to cultivate compassionate and non-judgmental awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment in the present moment. Practicing mindfulness has been found to increase positive emotions, memory, attention, altruism, compassion, self-esteem, resilience, and happiness, and decrease feelings of anxiety and depression.
You can stream our recordings below, or you can download both recordings and transcripts (if you would prefer to read them yourself) by clicking on the button above. The first three meditations are designed for general use throughout the curriculum while the last two meditations have been designed to accompany specific activities: "Reading the Clouds" and “Looking For Sparks." Feel free to use the meditations in any way and any order that you feel would best serve your students. Notes in the Facilitation Guides highlight when there is a particularly appropriate time to use one.
self awareness meditation
In order to be purposeful navigators in our lives, we first start with ourselves. We ask, “what do I value?” “what matters to me?” “what am I grateful for?” “what traits do I want to practice?”, but we can only get to know ourselves if we’re paying close attention. In this session we’ll guide students through a simple practice in paying attention.
world awareness meditation
Being aware of the world outside of ourselves is an important part of becoming a Wayfinder. We ask, “what guides me?” “who do I go to for support?” “what needs in the world do I care about?”, but exploring these questions with integrity requires us to be deeply connected to what is around us. In this session we’ll take students through a guided meditation in deepening gratitude.
purposeful action Meditation
Feeling confident and empowered is an important part of becoming a Wayfinder. We ask, “how can I confront fear?” “how do I overcome challenges?” “how can I move through self-doubt?”, but to answer these questions truthfully, we need to explore the things that hold us back. In this meditation we’ll guide students through a simple practice in making friends with self-doubt.
reading the clouds - EMOTIONS MEDITATION
Understanding our emotions is an important part of becoming a Wayfinder. We ask, “how can I stop losing my temper?” “how can I become happier?” “how can I cope with my anxiety?” but before we can really investigate these questions, we first need to accept our feelings and be able to sit with them. In this meditation we’ll guide students through a simple practice in accepting emotions. The script can be found both in the folder linked above and within the Reading the Clouds facilitation guide.
LoOKING FOR SPARKS - compassion MEDITATION
Practicing kindness and compassion is an important part of becoming a wayfinder. In this meditation we’ll guide you through a simple practice to build compassion for yourself and for others.
A recording of this meditation will be coming soon. In the meanwhile, please use the script which can be found both in the folder linked above and within the Looking for Sparks facilitation guide.
